From providing equitable access to the growing number of funding mechanisms to ensuring those schemes adapt to local challenges, many producers expressed both hope and frustration with global finance models. Regional and global streaming platforms have fueled production, but recent shifts like Amazon Prime Video’s abrupt pullout have left local producers vulnerable.

“The world is coming here. By the year 2040, Africa will have the largest GDP on the planet…. This needs to happen here,” says veteran talent agent Dana Sims.

Still, optimism was not in short supply in Durban, with industry reps from across the globe buzzing with a sense of possibility regarding the demographic and economic growth of the continent.
